I gave this graphic novel five stars and it was fantastic! I had read Nimona by Noelle Stevenson before reading this comic so I did have some expectation as to the funny and over-the-top aspects that she adds to her stories but this was just so much better than that. I found the plot to be so extremely entertaining and engaging that I read the whole thing in just about two hours without putting it down for a second.
When I started reading it at first I thought that it was really strange and thought that I honestly wouldn’t like it. But that ended up being the best part of the comic! I love how crazy and nonsensical it is while still maintaining a story line that makes sense and that does show some intelligence in its characters.
Before going into this comic I didn’t really know what it was about and I think that it actually made my enjoyment of the book even better because I didn’t know what to expect and it took me more by surprise.
I absolutely love all of the characters and their interactions just make me smile and laugh out loud. All of the characters also have different personalities that all really add something to the story and also all have a different set of skills that aid them in their challenges. I really think that this is just a fun graphic novel that you can just lose yourself in for a few hours and will 100% keep you wanting to read the next volume.
I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of this volume and how we are slowly discovering that there are mythical and magical creatures living in the same woods as the Lumberjanes camp and also that there seems to be some kind of dark power at play. I love mythology and I also love logic puzzles and quests so this really just wholeheartedly appealed to me. I also really enjoy the Lumberjanes, I really love the idea of all of the badges and gaining skills while making friends and it is just such a fun and unique setting for this type of fantasy based story.
I absolutely love the art style in this volume, it is really bright and colourful and really shows the emotions and actions of our characters really well. I have heard that in later volumes the art style does change but I am hoping that at some point they go back to this style again.
I have actually read the second volume now and I am about to start the third because I love it so much and just want to know what is going to happen next. I will most likely be writing reviews for each volume as I go along so look out for those if you are at all interested 🙂
Thank you for reading
